Form Study: Walrus

Creature Mark Project

Design Aesthetics 2

Spring 2023

The purpose of this project was to break down the form of an animal to its most simple, organic shapes, and rebuild an icon of the animal using those shapes. In order to accomplish this, I was tasked with extensive research, form sketches, and many different ideas and iterations.

Initial Research/Sketching:

I conducted research on the anatomical structure of the walrus and examined its components. After understanding poses and angles, I iterated to understand distinctive characteristics.

Key Features:

  • Tusks

  • Nose/nostrils/whiskers

  • Tail

  • wrinkles

Digital Iterations

After researching and sketching the various forms and shapes of the walrus, I broke its form down to basic shapes and began reconstructing poses based on the positioning of shapes.

Refinement:

Although my ideations depicted the walrus accurately, they did not follow the basic structural shapes. So I began back from the basics to build a form that utilized the organic shapes and iterated from there.

Major Refinements:

  • Nose was built out of the same ellipse to give repetition

  • Wrinkles were made even and reflected the tail

  • Tail was made out of the same pattern of the wrinkles
